The Seven Wonders of Work
1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
Could you imagine 25 to 40 years with no work. What would it be like without a reason to get up in the morning?
We tend to complain about having to work every day or we live out our weeks to get to the weekend. We wish our lives away. I think if we were to approach someone who has been searching for employment for a long time, or if we look back on history during the times of depression, we will find people desperate to find a job.
What if we saw our work, or our businesses, as a gift from God and not a curse? Would it change our lives? I believe it would change not only our lives but those we work with and the lives of our families and friends. Whenever we change the way we process pieces of our lives, slowly but surely, all the aspects of our lives change with it. What could change if our attitude gave “wonder” to our work? The word “wonder” translates from the Hebrew to mean “to be astonished or amazed”. What if every day your work astonished or amazed you? I think I would want to go and give it my very best. Perhaps, I can give you some clues on how to have your workweek create wonder for you, or at the very least become more appealing to you.
My seven wonders of work:
- Work was one of the first gifts God gave Adam. God also commands us to work and work as we are serving Him not man.
(Genesis 2:15, Ephesians 6:7)
- Work is to be done in the community, building relationships; God gave Adam a helpmate. (Genesis 2:18)
- Work is a way God has given us the ability to express ourselves. He gives each one of us talents and gifts that we can use in whatever position He has us in at the time. It pleases God to watch us work, not only does He watch us, He comes alongside us to work with us.
(Exodus 36:2, Acts 11:29, Deuteronomy 33:11, Joshua 1:5)
- Work keeps you from being lazy and it provides for you and those you love. Work brings us a sense of fulfillment. We were created to work.
(Proverbs 10:4, Proverbs 19:15, Isaiah 54:16, Ephesians 2:10)
- God is ultimately our provider, but His word is very clear that He blesses the work of our hands. He also says, “a man who does not work does not eat”.
(Psalm 111:5, Philippians 4:19, Psalm 90:17, 2 Thessalonians 3:10)
- Work provides us an opportunity to give to others and our churches through our income.
(Luke 18:12, Luke 11:41, Deuteronomy 15:11, John 13:29, Acts 10:2)
- The best part of our work is that it is a place of ministry. People who may never walk through the door of a church can find Christ through you at work.
(2 Timothy 4:5, Matthew 28:19, Mark 16:20)
I hope these tips help you to see your work as a wonder!
