Understanding Communications in Business
First Impressions – How Do They Play a Role in Our Business?
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15
First impressions are the most important part of communicating your business’s message. Think about it, all your current clients at one time listened to what you said and/or watched your actions to decide whether to be in a relationship with you and your company. Yes, we must always remember our businesses are built on relationships.
Consider this bit of information from https://www.psychologytoday.com
Researchers out of Princeton University have found that people make judgments about such things as trustworthiness, competence, and likeability within a fraction of a second after seeing someone’s face. In their study, Janine Willis and Alexander Todorov found that out of all the traits examined the participants judged trustworthiness the quickest (within 100 milliseconds). Even when given more time their judgments about trustworthiness typically did not change, which means our initial split-second assessments pretty much stick.
Thus, the saying in sales “always be on your game”. You get one chance to make a first impression. Ask yourself this before, during, and after every call or meeting. What is really going on in people’s minds when they are approached, sold, and or served by my business? What do they notice about us? What are they saying to others about us? What are they thinking about me as an individual? If you would consider this before every area of the first contact with potential clients, you would have a much better idea of the impression you make. You would also see many more return clients.
Crafting what you will say to a prospect, at a networking meeting, and in your marketing materials is vital to the success of your business. In today’s competitive market second chances are few and far between. Take the time to study and learn how to craft written and verbal messages for those first impressions and watch your business grow.
