For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
Advent traditions date back to the fourth century. Advent was meant to be a season of preparation for the baptism of new Christians at the January feast of Epiphany. By the sixth century the celebration became tied to Christ’s birth.
There are four weeks in December that symbolize the tradition of advent. Each week symbolizes a theme of Christ’s character. As we look at each of the week’s traditions, perhaps we can find ways to incorporate some new simple practices in our business to bring our teams and customers to a new understanding of what the Christmas season is truly about. Christ is the reason for the Season!
Maybe you could have advent candles to light every week as a symbol for your team to know the traditions you are endeavoring to bring about in your business during this time of year. Share with your team that you are working towards bringing the following four gifts that are given without cost into your daily work environment. Ask your team for suggestions on how to provide the following feelings for everyone they may encounter throughout their work. I have given a couple of suggestions for each week below to get you started.
The first week of advent is meant to bring hope. Hope is an expectation of something to come. These days hope is something hard to find in our world. One idea is you could; ” instead of saying hope you have a nice day.” perhaps you could think ahead and have something a little special for each person. For example, a note or a positive compliment or a chocolate. You could give them the treat then say, “Hope you have a great day!”
The second week is meant to bring others the gift of peace. And who doesn’t need a little peace in today’s world. Perhaps, for peace, it is just providing an environment that produces an overwhelming feeling of peace. Think of a spa experience; okay, maybe you can’t go that far, but you get the idea, some soft gentle music may be all it takes.
The third week is Joy. Did you know that just a smile can change a person’s mood? Mother Teresa was known for her smile. She smiled at the lowliest of the lows, bringing them comfort and joy while they were in the stages of pure agony.
The fourth and final week is love. Love is not a feeling it is a decision! It is not easy to love everyone, but we are commanded by our Lord and Savior to love everyone, even our enemies. What action or words could you show someone today so they might know they are loved. You may be the only one in their lives that have shown them love.
These simple changes in attitude and action could make a world of difference for someone. Your team may just find that they enjoy being the light for others and your whole business atmosphere has now moved into a living advent continuing forever. We pray that Hope, Peace, Joy and Love abound in your business and at your homes!
