We are hiring a Humanities high school subject specialist.
The specialist will work from a home office, serving as a consultant to home education parents at approximately 0.5 FTE. The consultancy will provide guidance and support to home educating parents who desire to pursue course challenge credits for their high school students. This requires familiarity with diverse home education resources as well as Alberta Curriculum resources in both electronic and print formats.
Tasks include:
- assisting parents to successfully prepare students to satisfy the relevant Alberta Programs of Study outcomes;
- managing and evaluating course challenges for students being educated under the authority of the Gilbertine Institute.
- A successful applicant must:
- be a practicing Christian;
- have personal experience with home education as either a home educating parent or graduate;
- attend a minimum of 6 staff meetings per year in locations including Edmonton, Calgary and Derwent;
- profoundly value the parents as the primary educators of their child, and respect parental choice in education;
- have a Bachelor of Education (minimum) and be certificated in the Province of Alberta;
- be familiar with a variety of traditional home education curricula and resources;
- possess experience teaching all levels of secondary education and in successfully preparing students for Alberta diploma exams in at least one of the following subjects: English, Social Studies. Training or teaching experience in history, philosophy, and classical languages is an asset.
- possess excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- be willing to work collaboratively with parents, students, staff, and administration;
- become familiar with the websites of WISDOM Home Schooling, as well as campuses of the Gilbertine Institute including Gilbertine Academy, Holy House, and Villa Spiritus;
- have the ability to work creatively with diverse resources in order to effectively help students achieve the content and rigor of Alberta Programs of Study;
- be comfortable working with electronic platforms, and capable of learning new platforms, including but not limited to Google Suite/Classrooms, Microsoft Suite, Zoom, Solaro;
Depending upon the expertise and availability of applicants and student numbers, The Gilbertine Institute is open to hiring an individual as a home education facilitator in addition to the specialist role. (Should the applicant be a practicing Catholic and proximate to the Gilbertine Academy campus in Calgary, he or she may consider applying for the half-time position of high school Humanities teacher.)
Certificated staff are not required to be members of the ATA, but remuneration will be commensurate with the standard grid in Alberta, based upon years of experience and years of education. Staff participate in a group benefit plan.
