JOB MISSION STATEMENT
MCC BC is a non-profit organization with Thrift Shops that generate revenue to support MCC’s world-changing relief, development, and peace work by offering affordable treasures to thrifty British Columbians. Thrift Shops are also an important way that MCC BC invites our communities, as customers, volunteers, and employees, into our work.
As a Thrift Shop General Manager, you will lead the shop’s leadership team, overseeing department heads and skillfully managing all facets of shop operations. Your role is pivotal in strengthening MCC’s presence in the Abbotsford thrift market and ensuring that shoppers, volunteers, employees, and the broader community are warmly welcomed into MCC’s impactful global initiatives.
JOB SUMMARY
As the General Manager of MCC BC’s MCC Centre Thrift Shop in Abbotsford, and reporting to the Director of Social Enterprise, you will be responsible for providing strategic leadership, market positioning, and daily operational management of the thrift shop. Overseeing multiple department heads, from the warehouse to the retail floor, you will guide your team in setting and achieving the shop’s goals, implementing key initiatives to drive success.
This multifaceted role includes overseeing retail operations, inventory management, team leadership, and facilities oversight. You will be responsible for developing both staff and leadership, ensuring effective administration, communications, and adherence to workplace safety standards. In addition, you will collaborate with the Director on special and pilot projects when requested. You will engage with customers, volunteers, employees, donors, and the wider community in a way that reflects MCC’s mission and values. As a representative of MCC BC, you’ll embody Christian integrity, serving as a role model in leadership and service.
MISSIONAL COMMITMENT, HOURS, LOCATION, & WORKING CONDITIONS
· Missional commitment: this role requires a demonstrated commitment to: a personal Christian faith and discipleship; active participation in a Christian church or Christian community; and nonviolent peacemaking. This role commits the employee to working collaboratively to create and maintain an organizational culture that prevents and responds to situations of abuse of power (sexual harassment, child abuse, racism, exploitation, and fraud among other situations). This role participates in devotional and prayer times at MCC BC and/or at local church and faith gatherings, being prepared to answer inquiries about MCC BC’s mission and values. This role contributes to a positive workplace culture based on Christian beliefs and values, while modelling nonviolent peacemaking in the workplace, in the community, and the church through respectful interactions with others. This role requires adherence to MCC BC’s Code of Conduct, policies, practices, and procedures, including Workplace Health and Safety.
· How much you work: this is a full-time salaried position working a minimum of 40 hours per week. Supporting special organizational initiatives may require working extended, after or holiday hours, as necessary.
· When you work: regular retail hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Saturday. Work shifts will begin prior to or extend later than retail hours. This role may require extended, after or holiday hours to support shop needs, issues, or special organizational initiatives, as necessary.
· Where you work: this position is located at MCC BC’s MCC Centre Thrift Shop in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Support for the Shop’s pick-up and delivery service may require travel in an MCC BC or personal vehicle to locations across the Fraser Valley and Greater Vancouver region. On occasion, training and meetings may require travel to other MCC locations in British Columbia or across North America.
· Pace of work: this position requires working in a comfortable but fast-paced retail shop/shipping & receiving environment. You may be met with multiple demands at once from customers, volunteers and employees, responding positively and adroitly throughout.
· Physical conditions and requirements: this position requires substantial time standing and moving around the shop to ensure smooth operations and to remain accessible and visible to customers, volunteers, and employees. It may also include time spend in an office setting for administrative tasks.
