Position Overview:
Pacific Academy, an independent Christian School located in Surrey, British Columbia, is seeking a Director of Finance. The Director of Finance plays a pivotal role in overseeing the financial health of the school. This position is responsible for managing all financial operations, including budgeting, financial planning, accounting, and reporting. The Director of Finance reports to the Head of School and works closely with the Board Finance Committee, and Senior Directors to support the school’s mission and ensure the school’s financial stewardship.
This role requires a collaborative leader who is focused on excellence in financial management that aligns with PA’s vision and centered in a culture of serving or service.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Financial Planning and Budgeting:
o Develop and manage the school’s annual budget in collaboration with the Head of School, Directors and Division Principals
o Support strategic planning by providing financial forecasts
o Monitor and report on the school’s financial performance, ensuring alignment with budgetary goals.
2. Accounting and Reporting:
o Oversee all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
o Prepare and present accurate financial statements and reports
o Ensure regulatory compliance for CRA and Ministry of Education reporting
3. Cash Flow and Asset Management:
o Manage the school’s cash flow to ensure sufficient liquidity for operations.
o Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard the school’s financial resources.
4. Financial Policies and Procedures:
o Ensure regulatory compliance is maintained including CRA compliant tax receipt preparation and Ministry of Education reporting.
o Review and update financial policies regularly, ensuring they align with the school’s goals and legal requirements.
o Provide training and guidance to staff on financial processes and policies.
5. Risk Management and Insurance:
o Oversee the school’s risk management program, including the procurement of appropriate insurance coverage.
o Work with the Head of School, Board Finance Committee to mitigate financial risks.
o Ensure compliance with safety and insurance requirements.
o Assist the Head of School and the Director of Facilities in the negotiation of third-party contracts.
6. Audit and Tax Compliance:
o Coordinate the annual independent audit, ensuring timely and accurate preparation of audit schedules and financial statements.
o Oversee the preparation and filing of all required tax documents and reports.
o Implement audit recommendations and address any findings.
7. Tuition Assistance:
o Develop and maintain a discreet, confidential and financially prudent budget and system for the provision of tuition assistance.
o Work closely with Admissions to develop financial strategies that align with the school’s enrollment goals.
o Ensure that tuition assistance is processed accurately and in a timely manner.
8. Human Resources:
o Manage the human resource function for the school, including maintaining employee benefits and pension, maintain appropriate policies and procedures and ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
9. Board Support:
o Serve on the Finance Committee and support the Treasurer in meeting fiduciary responsibilities.
o Prepare and present financial reports and analyses to the Board of Directors.
10. Leadership and Collaboration:
o Serve as a member of the senior leadership team, contributing to the overall strategic direction of the school.
o Collaborate with other directors and administrators on school-wide initiatives and projects.
o Supervise and mentor finance staff, fostering a culture of professional growth and accountability.
Qualifications:
• Know, understand and support the school’s statement of faith, mission, vision, and core values
• Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
• Minimum of 7-10 years of progressively responsible financial management experience, preferably in an educational or non-profit setting.
• Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, budgeting, and cash management.
• Experience with financial aid administration, and risk management.
• Proficiency in financial software and systems, with strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent time-management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
• High ethical standards and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality and integrity.
